Refugee Education Center Receives $4,000 Grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to Support Youth Literacy Initiatives
Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded the Refugee Education Center a $4,000 grant to support youth literacy initiatives. This local grant award is part of more than $3 million in grants awarded this fall to nearly 760 nonprofit organizations, libraries, and schools across Dollar General's 46 states.
The Refugee Education Center is honored to receive this gift and be entrusted by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support efforts to improve youth literacy in West Michigan. This new partnership will greatly impact the center’s afterschool program, which serves local students of a refugee background.
The funds supplied through this grant will enable the Refugee Education Center to purchase books and other resources to support language learning and literacy for the young refugee students enrolled in our afterschool program, Project Faulu. Project Faulu is the center’s cornerstone program service which was designed specifically for children whose cultural adjustments and past trauma can make learning difficult. Through one-on-one tutoring and peer support groups, the program focuses on literacy and language acquisition, STEM/STEAM curriculum, and the socio-emotional well-being of each child enrolled in the program.
“The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has been proud to invest in literacy and education programs in the communities we call home for nearly 30 years,” said Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and vice president of corporate social responsibility at Dollar General. “As the educational landscape continues to shift, our hope is that these funds will help increase access and resources for students, educators, and communities dedicated to reading and learning.”
