Refugee Students Author and Illustrate Children's Books

The Refugee Education Center teamed with Crooked Tree Stories to develop and publish two children’s short-story anthologies authored and illustrated by the brave refugee students supported by the Refugee Education Center. These creative and touching books take you inside the minds of refugee children, ages 6-14, as they grow into their new homes and draw on their lived experiences to tell stories of their hopes, fears, and good old-fashioned silliness!

One-hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of these books will support refugee students through the Refugee Education Center’s programs and services.

If I Were a Superhero is a collection of 16 adventurous short stories. You’ll be introduced to each young author's superhero personas who use their superpowers to help people in need; address natural disasters, such as floods and famine; and bring joy to people around the world.

Readers travel with our superheroes to Rwanda, Nigeria, Kenya, Nepal, Michigan, and more as they use their superpowers to improve the world. With each short story, catch a glimpse of the creativity, kindness, and hopes for a better future each young author possesses. The young refugee authors draw on their lived experiences to address their fears and dreams.
