Call for Virtual Tutors for Increased Student Need in 2020
Due to public health circumstances, our tutoring program, Project Faulu, will be 100 percent virtual starting in September. While the Refugee Education Center team misses seeing our students, we are excited to be able to serve more students than ever before, which means we need more helping hands on deck!
Story Time Volunteer
The story time volunteer calls 1-3 students each week and reads a story to them. The book could be one the volunteer already has at their house, one they find online or from a local library, or one borrowed from the Refugee Education Center’s library. Using video calling, the volunteer will check in with students, read the book to the students in an engaging and interactive way, and ask comprehensive questions.
English Tutor
The English volunteer tutor works with a student specifically on English language development (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). The volunteer calls a student once a week for one hour using video calling technology and engages the student in a lesson adapted to the student’s level. This tutor also receives training in i-Ready online curriculum, which students use in conjunction with their tutoring sessions.
Math Tutor
Math volunteers work with students specifically on developing core math skills. The volunteer calls a student once a week for one hour using video calling technology and engages the student in a lesson adapted to their level. The math tutor also receives training in the i-Ready online curriculum, which students will use in conjunction with their tutoring sessions.
Online Volunteer Tutor
Online volunteer tutors provide homework help and support online academic learning for any subjects where students are struggling. The volunteer calls the student once a week for a one-hour session using video calling technology. The tutor receives resources from the Refugee Education Center to aid with online tutoring. Tutors also receive training in i-Ready online curriculum, which will be an additional resource and aid for students in ELA and math.
Movement Mentor
Movement mentors work with students to get them moving and active in their homes! The movement mentor volunteer calls students once a week for 30 minutes, using video calling technology. There is also the option of outdoor porch sessions at the family's home while practicing social distancing. The movement mentor chooses a 30-minute exercise that produces movement and increases heart rate (stretching, dance, Pilates, songs with motions, or sports).
